Ministry: Russia may build 30 small LNG plants until 2035

MOSCOW, Oct 7 (PRIME) -- The Energy Ministry thinks that Russia may build around 30 small liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants until 2035 in addition to the existing 10, Frist Deputy Minister Pavel Sorokin said late on Thursday during a session of the energy committee of the parliament’s lower chamber State Duma.

“Around 10 small LNG plants are working in Russia today, their capacity amounts to about 200,000 tonnes, but loading is not full, it is only 60% … We plan to build about 30 small LNG plants until 2035, but we have to think about where they would sell their products,” he said.

Small LNG plants’ prices of 17,000–20,000 rubles per 1,000 cubic meters reflect high capital and operating costs. But implementation of Russia’s small LNG plants roadmap should cut capital costs for construction of small plants by 30%, he said.

Russia’s combined LNG production capacity amounts to almost 30 million tonnes right now, and the small production may cover 1.5–2 million tonnes of consumption in Russia in 2035, he added.
